If a parent or carer is concerned that their child may be self-harming, it's important to reassure them that the school will work with their family to support them
If a parent discloses that their child or another child in the school is self-harming, it’s important that the parent is supported by the school.
In this situation, you will need to:
- Remain calm.
- Reassure the parent that you are taking the matter seriously
- Explain the next steps and let them know you will follow appropriate policies and safeguarding procedures.
- Try and get as much information as possible.
- Share your school’s self-harm guidelines as well as details of support services and ways in which the school can support parents.
- Keep the parents informed and updated with what’s happening.
- Follow-up with an email/letter.
- Document all conversations.
Recommendation
Ask parent/carers how they are feeling and what impact this situation had on them. If they need support, then make sure that this is followed-up.
